About Me
My Background
I am a 64 year old African American board certified Internal Medicine physician by trade. I received my Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1983. I hold a Bachelor in Science in Chemistry and Biology from West Chester University, in West Chester Pennsylvania, where I graduated with Magnum Cum Laud Honors in 1979.
I grew up poor in a large family in Philadelphia and was blessed to be able to overcome poverty and accomplish higher education after dropping out of high school for a year in order to bring money into my household. I managed to turn a GED into an MD.
I have worked the past 35 years as part of the Federally Qualified Community Health Center movement providing healthcare services to the medically under-served and indigent populations of rural South Carolina. I have also served as CEO, Medical Director and Chief Information Officer of several health centers over the years.
For the past 5 years, prior to retirement last year, I worked as an Electronic Health Systems Administrator with primary duties that included training of clinical providers and support staff on usage of electronic health systems and quality assurance measures, and implementation of quality improvement plans. I also have substantial formal and informal training in computer operations, database management, computer network development and wireless communications technology.
